Melvyn Tan, Crucible Studio

The world-renowned pianist performs the world premiere of new parts of Variations for Judith in Sheffield tomorrow night.

The new variations complement the original Variations for Judith composed by some of Britain’s finest living composers including Michael Berkeley, Diana Burrell, Peter Maxwell Davies, Jonathan Dove, Thea Musgrave, Tarik O’Regan and Judith Weir.

They were a present for Judith Serota to mark her 19 years’ tenure as executive director of the Spitalfields Festival in London and were first performed at the Spitalfields Music Summer Festival in 2012.

Melvyn Tan’s programme also includes pieces by Bach, Chopin and Liszt, plus a rare opportunity to hear the music of the Russian-based Irish composer John Field.

The concert will be preceded by a free public afternoon masterclass for five pianists led by Melvyn, also in the theatre, focusing on selected Variations for Judith.

Members of the public, whether pianists or not, are invited to come along and listen to these performers and hear Melvyn’s expert insight and encouragement. The evening concert will also be followed by a free Q&A session with the musician.

Melvyn is appearing as part of Music in the Round’s spring season that also includes Exploring Haydn, a weekend festival of concerts, workshops and talks dedicated to the composer, a ‘Pay What You Want’ concert on Saturday and the final instalments of complete Beethoven piano sonatas and string quartet cycles by Ensemble 360 pianist Tim Horton.
