Sheffield’s Arctic Monkeys have been installed as joint favourites for a top music title after being shortlisted for the award.

Bookmaker William Hill has made the High Green quartet – vocalist Alex Turner, guitarist Jamie Cook, bassist Nick O’Malley and drummer Matt Helders – 4/1 joint favourites, alongside veteran rocker David Bowie, to pick up the Mercury Prize after they were named on the 12-strong shortlist.

The £20,000 prize aims to reward the best British and Irish album of the year and will be awarded on Wednesday, October 30 at a ceremony in London.

The Monkeys – 2006 winners for debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not – are nominated for their fifth album, AM, which is number one in the midweek charts after its release on Monday.
