If nicknames are a sign of blues prowess then one South London quartet are halfway there.

Following in the footsteps of names such as Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf are Little Devils.

Joining Dutch singer Yoka Qureshi and bassist and songwriter Graeme Wheatley in the band are ‘Big Ray’ Qureshi on guitar and drummer Sara Shaw.

“I call her the pint-sized powerhouse,” says Graeme, “She’s only small, but she makes a lot of noise.”

And the band are certainly making a lot of noise for themselves.

Crowned London’s best live band by a magazine poll in 2011 – having only started the year before – they have been named as ones to watch in 2015 at the Wrinkly Rockers Club annual awards.

The WRC said: “The powerful voice and stage presence of Yoka would float most Blues fanatics boats, but the engine room of Graeme and Sara, plus the dexterity of Ray equates to the Devils being a formidable blues unit.”

Graeme describes their sound as ‘21st century blues’.

“Sometimes we have people come and say it’s great, while other’s want to hear Hoochie Coochie Man,” he says.

And visitors to the Doncaster Blues Festival are urged to check out their live set.

Graeme says: “Last year, I remember a nice comment about one of our shows. They said it’s like the energy and commitment of a Bruce Springsteen gig.

“We are really looking forward to the festival, we have friends coming from all over to it.

“I am originally from Hartlepool and Sara is from Scarborough, so friends and family are coming from all around.”
