Rodrigo Y Gabriela Area 52 (Rubyworks)
THE Mexican duo revisit nine of their tunes with a Cuban orchestra in Havana, inevitably fattening their often rustic acoustic guitars with a warm broth of styles as piano, sitar, horns and more combine and compete with their string-plucking athletics. Cheesy in places, but largely an expansive triumph.
Milagres Glowing Mouth (Memphis)
NOT a dental complaint but a UK debut from a Brooklyn quintet whose leader found fresh impetus recovering from a climbing accident.
The Portugese word for miracle, Milagres don’t quite achieve that, but there’s much epic loveliness on a record brimming with imagery, poise, dynamics and escapism.
Chris Isaak Beyond The Sun (Rhino)
THIS tribute to the glory days of Sun Studios covers classics by the likes of Elvis (seven including My Happiness), Orbison, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis, canned at the same legendary Memphis recording rooms they used, from Ring Of Fire and Great Balls of Fire to So Long I’m Gone and Dixie Fried.
