Listening Post

White Lies Ritual (Fiction)

THiS is the second record from the brooding rockers, who have toured the planet's arenas and stadiums with the likes of Kings Of Leon, Coldplay and Muse. The darkly poetic Harry, Charles and Jack tender a record that befits those other acts for ambition. Is Love eases us into a collection faithful to their first and occasionally offering more sonic depth. Strangers, Bigger Than Us and Holy Ghost are highlights on the first significant album of 2011.

Bruno Mars Doo-Wops & Hooligans (Elektra)

GET beyond the dramatic pledges of opening track and new single Grenade and there's more than a hint of Jacko at his best in this lad's vocals.

Deservedly a higher profile prospect for 2011 for his hit Just The Way You Are, he stretches his legs on Doo-Wops to deliver reggae-edged ballads in Our First Time and Lazy Song and rocks it up on the cheeky Runaway Baby. Having put words and music into the mouths of Flo Rida, Sugababes and Alexandra Burke, Bruno has made a classy dbut that confirms him as a pop artist deservedly out of the shadows.

T.I. No Mercy (Grand Hustle)

WITH more guests on here than a Graham Norton series it's a wonder the Grammy-nominated rapper turns a profit, but seven albums in he knows what strikes gold. Then T.I. featured on several summer hits for the likes of Jamie Foxx and B.o.B. Following his hit-giving Paper Trail and film role in Takers, your host calls in Drake, Scarface, Aguilera, Kanye West for an album highlighted by the smooth Chris Brown-aided Get Back Up, the more urgent I Can't Help It, with Rocko, and excellent Eminem-assisted That's All She Wrote.
