THEY’RE not even from Yorkshire – but that didn’t stop Dronfield Brass Band becoming county champions.
The band, from Derbyshire on the outskirts of Sheffield, took the title after winning the third section of the competition in the Yorkshire Championships in Bradford.
And the band will now represent Yorkshire in the finals of the National Brass Band competition in Cheltenham in September.
The success completes a magnificent hat-trick for the band during an unprecedented run of success under conductor John Davis.
The band has been promoted from the fourth to the second section of competitions in just three years. It has also won the Battle of the Bands entertainment competition for the last three years.
The run of form has been complemented by winning the open entertainment contest held in Dronfield last September, beating bands from higher sections.
John said the key to success was the hard work of the band combined with a sense of team and togetherness – which enabled them to play with style and panache on the popular test piece ‘Hollywood!’.
A spokesman for the band said: “We are fortunate to have a number of experienced players who are keen to support and encourage the younger players.
“In addition to its prize-winning contest band, there is also Dronfield Community Band and Dronfield Training Band, which welcomes new players of all standards.”
The band will now start a programme of fundraising to cover the cost of competing in the national final – which has cost more than £5,000 in the past.
