Shaklespeare and Elvis Presley finally get to share a stage in a new show from Woodseats Musical Theatre Company.
It’s what’s commonly known as a jukebox musical, where a mixture of enduring pop hits is placed into a dramatic setting.
The musical source is a selection of some of Elvis Presley’s greatest hits, every from Jailhouse Rock to Hound Dog and Blue Suede Shoes.
The unlikely twist is that these pop classics have been shoehorned into a story that is in essence a loose reworking of Shakespeare’s comedy of sexual identity and gender-bending romance, Twelfth Night.
This time around the story has been relocated to America’s 1950s Mid West, complete with a heroine who works as a mechanic and whose cross dressing leads to the story’s central romantic confusion.
Director Mary Newey said: “Anybody who is scared that a musical version of Twelfth Night sounds a bit too highbrow for them shouldn’t worry. All Shook Up is fantastic fun with great songs and a delightful romantic comedy plot but I don’t think even Shakespeare would really recognise it as anything he wrote!”
