They say first impressions count and my first impression of Double Dragon comes when I open the takeaway that’s been delivered to find the prawn crackers – free with orders over £10 – are missing.
It’s not a good start.
Prawn crackers don’t make or break a Chinese meal but when you don’t have them – especially when you should be having them for nowt – it’s not quite the same.
Still, we soldier on.
The rest of what Double Dragon does, it does well – and generously. Salt and pepper chicken wings for starters are spicy and bitey, chicken with bamboo and water chestnuts has a fresh, effervescent buzz and roast duck with ginger and onion is simple but effective. Crispy shredded beef is a bit sweet and sour for our liking but nice enough. Rice is rice.
First impressions weren’t great. Lasting impressions were better.
