IF YOU’RE after a good chippy then few places beat Whitby.
Trouble is the resort famous for its fish and chips is more than 100 miles away.
So is there anywhere in South Yorkshire which can rival the likes of Whitby’s Magpie, Silver Street Fisheries, Royal, Trenchers and Mr Chips?
Actually yes there is.
And it goes by that very name, Whitby’s.
You’ll find it tucked away off Poplar Way in Catcliffe.
The queues are proof that Whitby’s takeaway chippy is fast gaining a reputation.
But the short wait for freshly prepared food is well worth it.
Our order – two large fish, one with peas and a freshly-made tartar sauce, the other with curry sauce, a steak pie with gravy for the non-fish lover and each with a large portion of chips – took around ten minutes.
The fish was white and flaky but, as you would expect, not quite as fresh as you get at the seaside.
The chips were perfect, golden crisp and fluffy within. The pie was meaty and perfectly complemented by the tasty gravy and a splash of Henderson’s Relish.
Mushy peas and curry were much as you might expect from a good quality chip shop and the tartar sauce was just right.
Served in boxes to save on washing up.
Our bill came to £15.15.
It’s a breath of fresh sea air in Catcliffe by the Rother.
