GOOD things are worth waiting for, but a takeaway advertising a meal which needs 48 hours preparation?
It sounds like a contradiction in terms, but this intriguing offer from the Viraaj in Woodseats sounded worthy of investigation.
It is in the old Woodseats Hotel on Chesterfield Road and still looks like a pub, but has been done out in black, white and red.
Its takeaway menu is extensive and offers all the usuals but the outstanding dishes are those which require 48 hours’ notice.
Under the heading Mehmani Khana – which apparently is a drawing room where guests are entertained in houses in North India, Bangladesh and Pakistan – the list offers three options, all for two people.
Lamb kurzi is a leg of lamb cooked in masalam sauce topped with roast potatoes, grilled onions and peppers, flavoured with yoghurt.
Chicken masalm is two baby chickens cooked in masalam sauce stuffed with boiled egg and topped with grilled onions and peppers and flavoured with yoghurt.
Fish masalm is whole Bangladeshi Ayer freshwater fish sliced and grilled, cooked in masalam sauce. Its topped with mint, onion, green peppers and chillis.
All sounded intriguing, but as fish is the current house favourite, we went for that.
And the fish didn’t disappoint. It was a whole fish with peppy spicing which gave the dish a pleasant kick. The mint added a fresh finish after plentiful peppers and chillis.
This was a success and left us utterly satisfied, but some might splutter at the price – it was £39.95. This includes a choice of rice, nan bread and a vegetable side dish.
But even with that, it’s a restaurant price. So is it a fair deal?
We thought so because, let’s face it, the meal had taken two days to prepare. It was also sufficiently different to anything else in Sheffield to make it worthwhile.
So we toasted this innovation and a good new addition to our curry house options.
