ALL RIGHT, I cheated.
It was going to be a Chinese takeaway for the family but, as these things tend to with grown-up kids, it didn’t quite work out.
So with a Takeaway Test and a late shift to combine it had to be city centre and it had to be early.
Having eaten in at Gusto Italiano a couple of times and recommended it to friends there was no danger of getting dud takeaway.
And it wasn’t.
With the guidance of a helpful and very patient waitress I was able to negotiate a couple of half portions to get the best spread of what was on offer.
Which wasn’t easy. All the food looks beautiful, fresh, home-made and unmistakebly Italian.
After some dithering the choice was roast vegetable calzone, spinach and ricotta cannelloni, a slice of pizza and salad.
With a couple of minutes to wait there was the Italian sports paper La Gazzetta dello Sport lying at a table in the cafe that actually feels like it’s in Italy.
Picking out the words that looked like French or English I now know what Joe Jordan called Gennaro Gattuso before he was head butted after AC Milan lost to Spurs in the Champions League last week.
But we digress.
The food was superb. The calzone was rich and packed with tasty roasted veg and the spinach cannelloni was equally lovely with a sensational tomato sauce.
The pizza had a crisp base, was loaded with cheese and was as good as any I’ve had.
The salad was of mixed leaves with tomato and black and green olives with a balsamic vinegar dressing.
All have a home-made touch and all are such a delight that you don’t want to finish.
It’s not particularly cheap and you’d better not be counting the calories but Gusto do a five-star takeaway.
Forza Italia, never mind what Joe Jordan says.
