WHEN a new fish and chip shop gets the seal of approval from the town’s leading citizen it has to be worth checking out.
Mayor Peter Davies officially opened Fish Bits in Hyde Park, Doncaster, earlier this year and a friend’s recommendation based on personal experience was a further inducement to give it a try.
Fish Bits, in Carr House Road, stands out from the crowd with a blue neon-lit frontage that encompasses both a takeaway counter and a smart restaurant on the other side.
Open every day from lunchtime to mid-evening, there’s always cars parked outside the premises and it never seems quiet when you drive past.
They say: “Our goal is to bring culinary satisfaction to all our customers through our experience and commitment to ensure our menu is exciting and adventurous by creating the highest quality of meals.”
We say: “That’s about right.”
Haddock is always our fried fish of choice and this one didn’t disappoint.
It was long, succulent and well battered with no hint of sogginess that you sometimes get.
Fish Bits fish is delivered direct from Grimsby and it was certainly fresh tasting, without the ‘greyness’ some cooked fish exhibits.
The chips were also firm and not disintegrating on arrival and the mushy peas had a tanginess which suggested they were not straight out of a giant can.
The prices at Fish Bits are a little higher than other chip shops around Donny but we thought the excellent quality justified them.
We also reckoned the staff were very pleasant and would definitely plan a return visit soon to place another order.
The adjacent restaurant also looked very welcoming and most tables were occupied when we peered through the window.
Haddock and generous chips for two cost £11, mushy peas extra.
