“This is the best Jamaican food I’ve tasted – outside Jamaica of course. That chef can cook!”
Quite a compliment coming from a Jamaican.
My husband would be the first to admit he is very fussy when it comes to food, particularly when compared to dishes he makes himself.
So his comments about Dunn’s River Caribbean Bistro really were a pleasant and unexpected surprise.
I had a good feel about the place as soon as we walked in to order a takeaway. They are very welcoming and there are plenty of tempting dishes on the menu.
But the thing that really counts is the quality of the food and when we got home, we all agreed we had discovered a gem.
The kids devoured Caribbean patties as their starter, while we waited for our order, and they gave both the veggie and chicken versions a thumbs-up.
The chef did advise us to call and order in advance next time since everything is made fresh so there can be quite a wait.
Jordan and I went for jerk chicken which is often disappointing as a takeaway but was cooked to perfection at Dunn’s River.
Howard had curry mutton and Jamie opted for ackee stir fry with fried dumplings.
The unmissable jerk chicken with rice and peas costs £5.75 but there are cheaper options including ackee stir fry or stuffed pepper with sweet potato mash for £4.50. None of us had tried jerk spare ribs before and at £2.50 they were a tasty bargain.
The golden dumplings were just as they should be and even the loyal kids admitted they just might have been better than the ones we make at home.
In the end, after much tasting and debating, we couldn’t decide which dish was the best – so we’ll just have to go back and have a second go.
