WITH a name like Chunky’s it’s certain this popular takeaway is no salad bar.
We turned to the favourite on Sheffield’s ‘restaurant row’ Ecclesall Road when hunger struck, the cupboards were bare and our wallets almost were, too long before payday.
Chunky’s offers a full range of takeaway options – kebabs, southern fried chicken, peri peri meals, wraps and burgers – for hungry hordes leaving the many pubs nearby.
But it was pizza we craved.
There are 20 varieties, including vegetarian, house specials and the usual favourites, to choose from on the menu.
We selected three, a large classic margherita, small Apna style with tandoori chicken, spicy mince, sweetcorn and green chilli plus a large Chunky’s Monster Meat Feast – exactly what it says on the tin.
Add three portions of wedges and the bill still barely topped £20, a revelation for one housemate with a seriously expensive habit for brand-name dough.
After ordering online it took less than 30 minutes for our goodies to turn up at the door with a friendly delivery driver.
Collection could have been even quicker but delivery is free for orders over £10.
All the pizzas were piping hot with generous amounts of toppings, scrummy soft dough bases, and not too much grease as can often be the case.
The Apna was deliciously spicy, the meat feast enough to feed a small country and the margherita, well as good as cheese and tomato ever can be.
Wedges were tasty although there seemed to only be a few of them in a regular tray.
Luckily we were already stuffed, with no room left for the desserts Chunky offers, subject to availability.
It may not be pizza the way Italians originally intended but the generous portions of these had left us truly satisfied.
