STANDING at the bus stop waiting for the bus home in the cold and rain, I decided I needed some sunshine in my life to cheer me up.
So on the way home I popped into Caribbean Avenue, which is a newish cafe in Meersbrook that also runs a takeaway service.
When I popped in to get a menu, the reggae music was belting out full swing, so that lifted my mood.
They have a deal that you can get a takeaway meal for £6 or £6.50. All the dishes come with rice and peas plus either hard food (a cabbage dish) or salad.
The choices cover lots of Jamaican favourites like mutton curry, saltfish and ackee or jerk chicken and there is a reasonable choice for veggies as well.
I went home and ordered by phone and was pleasantly surprised to find that my order would be ready in 15 minutes.
Just time to take the dog for a walk, take her home and feed her so that I could pop out to get my own dinner.
My jerk chicken and side orders of plantain and a dumpling was waiting when I arrived and they were just making my pineapple punch (they do a range of juices and traditional punches), so they gave me a taste to see if I liked it. I did as it wasn’t too sweet – a mixture of pineapple and coconut milk.
I got a big compartmentalised box of food (I couldn’t finish it) filled with two pieces of excellently spiced chicken, zingy cabbage, moist and tasty rice and peas (really kidney beans) and a spicy curry sauce with a good kick to it.
The plantain was sweet and the cricket ball-sized dumpling was surprisingly light with a slight crunch to the outside.
