Curry time! I’d saved a brochure that I liked the look of when it came through the door.

The Apna Lahore offer apna, or home-cooked style, dishes that are a bit more authentic than what’s usually on offer from a curry takeaway.

They serve most of the favourite curry house dishes as well, plus pizzas, southern fried chicken, kebabs and burgers.

My karelay gosht meat dish was full of tender pieces of lamb in a dark, very spicy sauce. It was top stuff, long cooked and properly spiced. They will make it milder if you prefer. The tarka daal lentil-based side dish had a spicy, garlicky taste and good consistency.

Both went beautifully with two chappatis. The only disappointment was the poppadoms and pickle tray. My bill came to £12.
