Rain is threatening to turn British BBQ Week into a washout - but if South Yorkshire does get a sunny spell, families are being urged to ditch the supermarket sausages and burgers and support South Yorkshire farmers by choosing locally-reared meat.

The barbecue week runs until Sunday and last year’s event saw more than five million BBQs lit.

This weekend Ferndale Garden Centre at Coal Aston are leading the way with a locally-sourced barbecue menu in its cafe.

Ferndale director Helen Watson says: “We are proud to be big ‘buy local’ supporters and will be selling award-winning burgers and sausages made by our neighbours at Norton-based Moss Valley Meats.

“The farm company is run by Stephen Thompson, who won Food Hero status in the Eat Sheffield Awrds. Our chicken is being supplied by a local butcher . We urge everyone planning to light up the barbie to shop local too.”
