Barnsley brewery Acorn is heading to Barcelona this week in a bid to crack the Spanish market – after selling £10,000 of its real ale to Italy.

Owner Dave Hughes and commercial director David Broadhead will be meeting over 60 Spanish buyers at the UKTI’s Great British Speciality Beer and Food Exhibition tomorrow.

The Wombwell brewery, launched in 2003, runs the Old No 7 in Barnsley town centre and turns over £1.2 million. It delivers beer to 400 UK pubs and bars and counts all five major UK supermarket chains as customers.

Hand-pulled cask ale still accounts for 90 per cent of production, but a 20 per cent increase in its bottled beers has opened up export markets.
