A Sheffield cinema is to become one of only a handful in the world to install IMAX laser technology.

The new technology is being installed at Cineworld Sheffield in time for the release of new James Bond film Spectre on October 26.

There are currently only seven cinemas in the world that has the laser projection fitted, with the only other British location in London’s Leicester Square.

The technology is designed to provide ‘sharpest, brightest, clearest and most vivid digital images ever’ with improved sound.

All films presented through the new system will be digitally remastered specifically for IMAX with laser.

The new Sheffield auditorium will include 548 seats for 2D screenings and 460 seats for 3D screenings, plus a curved screen that is taller than two double-decker buses.

It comes as Cineworld Sheffield also prepares to open a 4DX screen this month, which will include high-tech motion seats and special effects such as wind, fog, bubbles, water, rain and scents.

Karen Godfrey, General Manager at Cineworld Sheffield said: “We are very excited to be upgrading our IMAX to IMAX with laser and in time for SPECTRE and Star Wars.

“It’s fantastic to be able to offer the people of Sheffield the very best IMAX experience and with 4DX also launching soon, it’s a very exciting time.”

Andrew Cripps, President of IMAX EMEA, added: “IMAX with laser continues a long tradition of innovation at IMAX that is centered around creating a unique experience that moviegoers can’t find anywhere else.

“Cineworld shares in this commitment and together we look forward to bringing audiences in Sheffield the ultimate way to experience their favourite films.”
