JUDGES at a Sheffield film festival have hailed the standard of entries at this year’s event.

The Sheffield Adventure Film Festival starts on Friday and organisers today announced their winners, ‘to give the audience a chance to see for themselves what they make of our judging panel’s choices’.

Matt Heason, festival director, said: “This year’s judging was tougher than ever. We had more films and a higher standard than ever before.”

Films with a Sheffield connection were among the winners, with The Dragon’s Back, by Sheffield film-maker Rich Heap among the awards.

Lissa Cook, festival co-orgainser, said: “What stood out for me this year was the number of British film-makers and quality of British made films – and it’s great we’ve got a Sheffield director premiering his film in the city and winning three prizes.

“Personally, I’ve been pleased by the number of films featuring female athletes. We’re nowhere near parity but we’re getting there.”

The judges included Sheffield-based climber Lucy Creamer, eight-times British climbing champion.

Talking about best climbing film winner Wide Boyz, Lucy, aged 41, from Meersbrook, said: “You’ve got an incredible story about these two British guys who train really hard in their cellar and go to America and kick butt.”
