A convoy of motorbikes is revving up to cruise along a bus lane in Doncaster today in celebration of a successful campaign.

Members of the Barnsley and Doncaster Motorcycle Action Group will ride in convoy on the bus lane, which runs along York Road.

The event is to mark the group’s victory in securing a trial of allowing powered two-wheeled vehicles including motorcycles, scooters and mopeds to use the bus lane.

The trial, which began on May 19, will run for 18 months and is only applicable to the one lane in town.

BAD MAG member Sharon Thompson said: “It frees up congestion on the roads, especially during busy times and it’s safer for riders on the roads.

“You also get less emissions in the bus lane so you’re breathing in cleaner air. It will help with all of that.”

The bus lane is open to motorbikes from Don Valley school, Scawthorpe through to the St George’s bridge roundabout, with full access to bus gates. There are no time restrictions.

Today, the bikers will gather at The Highwayman on Great North Road, Woodlands, from 11am. They will set off along York Road at 12 noon and expect the ride to J&S Accessories motorbike parts shop on Marsh Gate to take about 40 minutes.

Motorists are advised that trikes and sidecars are not permitted in the bus lane.
