VIDEO: Naked TV stars stage Full Monty in Sheffield

HUNKY Kenny Doughty admits it will be ‘weird’ getting his kit off in front of his mother-in-law after landing his dream job - as the lead in a new stage version of The Full Monty.

It means doing his ‘Sexy Thing’ in front of her, his mum, and all their pals at Sheffield’s Lyceum theatre.
Ironically, the 37-year-old from Barnsley and his actress wife Caroline Carver moved to Los Angeles - the acting capital of the world - to pursue their careers.

But he’s ended up coming full circle, returning home to play the leader of the group of unemployed steelworkers who try to change their fortunes as a male striptease act.

Kenny plays Gaz, the part made famous in the 1997 film by Robert Carlyle, who declares they will go ‘the full monty’ - strip all the way - hence the title.

“Yes. Everything does come off at the end. Absolutely. It is the Full Monty,” reveals Kenny, whose credits range from Coronation Street to Ruth Jones’ new Sky TV comedy Stella. plus screen roles with Daniel Craig and Andie MacDowell.

“The thing is my mother-in-law has booked 20 tickets. My mum has also bought 20 tickets, which is brilliant. But it’s a bit weird.

“I’m in denial about actually knowing people in the audience.”

The Sheffield Theatres production, adapted by original Full Monty writer Simon Beaufoy and directed by Daniel Evans, runs from February 2 to 23.

It also features the city’s own West End star Scott Anson, whose credits include Miss Saigon, Blood Brothers and Jesus Christ Superstar.

“I’m playing several characters, but covering for three of the stripping boys,” said Scott, who has also recently released his debut album, Angels Of My Better Nature, produced by Sheffield’s Eliot Kennedy.

“So, if called on, I’ll get my kit off, the Full Monty, the works, everything.”

Simon Rouse, 61, Supt Jack Meadows in the ITV’s The Bill and recently seen in Coronation Street, plays Gerald, the Tom Wilkinson film role.

He said: “The Full Monty is a fabulous story. It works so beautifully. It could have been written as a play. And there’s a fantastic set, based around the old steelworks.”

It also stars Sidney Cole (Absolutely Fabulous), Craig Gazey (Coronation Street), Roger Morlidge (The English Patient), Keiran O’Brien (Nine Songs), Tracy Brabin, Caroline Carver, Eamonn Fleming, Elaine Glover, Rachel Lumberg and Ian Mercer.

Tickets are priced from £9 to £30, subject to a booking fee. Buy in person, call 0114 249 6000 or buy online at www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/event/the-full-monty.
