The Caribbean-themed chain restaurant first got the go ahead in September 2016 but the project was delayed over issues regarding a staircase.

Restaurant bossed ended up in a legal tussle with the city council after deeming plans for waiters to carry food and drink on the stairs as unsafe.

However, with that issue tied up in February last year, contractors have been busy with the £5m refurbishment of the former NUM building off Barker's Pool.

The internal fitting of the restaurant is now underway and an opening date of June 3 has now been revealed by bosses.

A Turtle Bay spokesperson said that the restaurant will bring 'some Caribbean warmth and sunshine to 'Steel City''.

A spokesperson said: "Turtle Bay is all about celebrating the lively, colourful and delicious experiences that the Caribbean has to offer - from rich and explosive flavours to laid back ‘liming’.

"Food is at the heart of the Turtle Bay experience – just as it’s central to the heart and soul of Caribbean culture.

"The restaurant offers a vast choice of delicious dishes with bold flavours all inspired by the laid-back, social outlook of the Caribbean. The menu is meticulously researched and lovingly created.

"Turtle Bay creates a flavour of the Caribbean for guests as soon as they walk through the door, transporting guests to sunnier climes. Sheffield diners can expect a vibrant, quirky, beach-shack-inspired ray of sunshine of a restaurant!

"Welcoming and sociable, Turtle Bay on Holly Street will have its own bespoke design, making it unique to Sheffield. One of Turtle Bay’s most ambitious transformations, the restaurant will be a contemporary and smart take on the Caribbean, featuring an open street kitchen and an impressive island beach bar."

More than £800k has been invested in the site to create a 172 seater restaurant across two floors, including 142 on the ground floor and 30 on a mezzanine floor.
