A peace giant and dozens of dancers united to celebrate St George’s Day in Sheffield city centre.

The Sheffield City Giants and other dance groups entertained onlookers at yesterday’s celebration for England’s patron saint.

The giant woman, Peace, dressed in green and accessorised with flowers, is one of the finest English examples of processional giants in the Catalan style.

She and a giant man, War, were made in Sheffield in 1992 by a Catalan giant maker.

Usually to be found in the city’s Kelham Island Museum, they are used at a variety of events and festivals as part of a traditional dance. Another chance to see both giants, and dancers from other groups such as Yorkshire Chandelier, Lizzie Dripping, Three Shires Clog and Boggarts Breakfast, takes place on Saturday, with displays in Barker’s Pool and the Peace Gardens in the city centre. The entertainment begins at 11am.
