IMPRESSIVE installations celebrated the art of conversation after taking over one of Sheffield’s busiest shopping streets.
Creative juices were in full flow on The Moor as an army of first-year students from the University of Sheffield’s architecture school transformed the area into a working exhibition.
Proving they can work with much more than bricks and water, around 100 students set to work building models using a wealth of materials.
Nine groups were tasked with creating installations from glass, timber, concrete and plastic completing them ahead of the lunchtime rush.
The aim of the project was to get the people of Sheffield talking – and they certainly succeeded.
Hundreds of passers-by stopped to find out more about the two-person rocking chair, parked themselves on seating made entirely of glass bottles and copped a feel of the igloo-like structure made from polymers.
Student Christina Guerrero, aged 19, said: “Everything was based around the idea of making something which provoked conversation and involved the public more.
“In a busy high street not many people stop to chat so we wanted to draw people in and get strangers talking to each other.
“I worked on the timber chair model at the top of The Moor. Our idea was to create a rocking chair which could only start moving if the two people on it communicated. Lots of people came to try it out.”
An empty shop space in The Moor was also made into a makeshift exhibition for the day as part of the project.
Christina said: “This was our first big-scale project and it went well. Some people were offering to buy our work.”
