SOMEWHERE over the rainbow was a first class production of classic musical The Wizard of Oz staged by pupils at a South Yorkshire secondary.

Youngsters at Oakwood High School in Rotherham had put in countless hours of hard work over many months to perfect their annual stage show.

A cast of 50 students put on five packed out performances with the help of the school band and the choir from Herringthorpe Junior School.

And their efforts paid off – with everyone impressed by the quality of the acting, singing and dancing.

Riannon Davies starred as Dorothy, while the rest of the cast filled the stage with energy and colour.

Daniel Wright, who played the Cowardly Lion, said: “We had been rehearsing for nine months, including extra vocal sessions to improve our singing. It all went wonderfully to plan so I can’t wait to be part of the next show.”

Zain Ghani, who played the Coroner, added: “The best moment was seeing the faces of the applauding audience light up – we realised we had pulled off a great success.”

Parents and staff played their part, helping to create first class sets and costumes, but the pupils took responsibility for the lighting, sound and live music.

Artistic directors of the show were teachers Jonathan Jones and Michelle Bowater, who took the cast from nervous beginners to confident performers.

Teacher Russ Wood said the show had been one of the best ever seen at the school.

“Jonathan and Michelle did a great job in getting all the actors in the right place at the right time and serving up a superlative wizard treat.

“These were five terrific shows, which delighted audiences with charming characters and well loved songs. Riannon’s rendition of Over The Rainbow was simply first class.”
