Olympic rowing legend Sir Matthew Pinsent CBE is to open the newly refurbished Multi-User Games Area at Baslow Sports Field this Saturday at 10.30am.

The four time gold medallist will unveil a plaque - and shoot a few netball hoops - at a facility used regularly by local sports clubs including tennis, football and netball, but which was at least 20 years old and ready for redevelopment.

Sir Matthew said: “I am delighted to be visiting Baslow to take a look at the facilities and see what the team there are doing to encourage people of all ages to get involved in sport. It is testimony to the Olympic legacy that much needed funds are available for big and small projects alike. Sport is playing a major, and very positive, part in people’s lives.”

The refurbishment has been completed in part thanks to a £30,000 grant from Sport England, which paid for a new playing surface, new markings, improved boundary fencing and lighting and goalposts.

Peter Holt, chairman of Baslow Sports Field Trust, said: “The impact of refurbishing our MUGA will mean local clubs will continue to enjoy using top quality, high specification and safe facilities. It will also mean that we can grow participation in sport.”
