A YOUNG girl’s account of life in a WW2 concentration camp has been translated into English for the first time by a Sheffield academic.
Helga’s Diary, written by eight-year-old Helga Weiss between 1938 and 1944, takes readers inside a concentration camp – Terezín, in what is now the Czech Republic.
Prof Neil Bermel, head of the school of languages and cultures at the University of Sheffield, has translated it from Czech into English and it is being published by Penguin this week.
He said: “For a translator, a work like Helga’s Diary is a tremendous opportunity and responsibility.”
