Sheffield coffee shop fails in its bid for light-up sign

A COFFEE shop has been refused permission to have an illuminated sign displayed at one of its outlets - as councillors believed the move would impact on the surrounding area’s character.

Costa Coffee, at the junction of Crookes Road in Broomhill, had applied retrospectively to install a ‘double sided projecting sign’ on its premises.

But members of the city centre, south and west planning board meeting ruled against the proposal.

Coun Jayne Dunn, Labour, Broomhill, said the sign would have been ‘out of place in the area’.

Surrounding buildings form part of the Broomhill Conservation Area.

Planning officers described the proposed sign as ‘harmful to the visual amenity of the area’.

The application also included vinyl logo adverts on a first-floor window.
