doncaster’s new-look town centre library is to be relaunched next week after a transformation to bring the dated building into the 21st century.
The new chapter for the Central Library and Children’s Library in Waterdale on March 4 is being held during the same week as World Book Day, which aims to help children explore the pleasure of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own, and encouraging them to join a library.
To celebrate children from the Sticky Mits and The Cavendish nurseries will enjoy a storytime activity with songs and rhymes.
Doncaster Council say the look and feel of the 1960s building has been transformed so they are more open, welcoming and accessible.
The £120,000 refurbishment has included redecoration, new carpets in some areas, the introduction of additional seating areas, and the refurbishment of the public toilets.
Staff worked hard to ensure Central Library stayed open throughout the refurbishment and the Children’s Library closed for just five days, with children’s books still available.
New enquiry points in central locations throughout the Central Library, instead of long and large counters, make staff more accessible and approachable.
There is a local studies display area in Central Library which is currently displaying information about Doncaster’s Sand House, and Doncaster and District Family History Society are also currently exhibiting in Central Library and on Thursday mornings a volunteer shows people how to use genealogy websites.
Easy to use self-service points allow people to check-out, renew and return items themselves so staff can deal with more detailed enquiries.
Different areas are colour coded; blue for information, green for heritage, orange for lending services, yellow for children, making it easier for people to find what they are looking for.
Mayor of Doncaster Peter Davies said: “This is a fantastic refurbishment which has made the most of our excellent Central Library and Children’s Library. The changes have made them easier to use, even more welcoming and helped make our friendly and knowledgeable staff even more accessible.
“Our award winning libraries just keep on getting better, I hope everyone enjoys using the buildings and attending the events that are held throughout the year.”
In the summer the doors facing Sir Nigel Gresley Square will have seating outside for people to enjoy ice cream from a new library cafe.
