Talented members of a Sheffield dance centre will take to the stage this week in memory of their former principal.

Every two years, the Constance Grant Dance Centre holds a spectacular ‘Let’s Dance’ show – but this year’s event will be bittersweet as it’s the first one since the death of principal Judith Silvester.

Judith – affectionately known as Miss Judy to her students – died suddenly last year aged 76 while visiting Cyprus for work.

The dance centre, based on Psalter Lane, Nether Edge, is now run by her daughters, Tracey Southern and Karen Siddall, who have picked the theme of ‘Past and Present Chapters’ for this year’s Let’s Dance show at Sheffield City Hall.

The evening performances tonight, tomorrow and Wednesday, will feature some of Judith’s favourite numbers that she choreographed over the years.

Karen said: “Mum was a highly respected and inspirational dance teacher who, for more than 50 years trained thousands of pupils, many of these going on to become stars or influential people in the world of dance or theatre.

“She had a flair and talent for drawing out the best in people, and influenced thousands of principals, dancers, chorus members, singers, musicians, technicians and stage staff.

“She had many great friends, but behind all the glitz and glamour that was a big part of her life, she was an ordinary fun-loving girl and a brilliant host, who loved her family and adored her grandchildren.

“It’s going to be an emotional time for everyone involved, but it’s wonderful her legacy lives on and we’re sure she’ll be watching from the wings up above.”

The Judith Silvester award – a year’s scholarship for tuition at the centre – will be presented on Wednesday evening to a pupil who has worked with consistency and dedication.
