WORK on the new In Patient Unit at St Luke’s Hospice seems to have uncovered one unexpected surprise… there really might be fairies at the bottom of the garden.
But these unlikely residents of an unseen magical kingdom are actually members of Dore Gilbert and Sullivan Society.
And they dodged the heavy machinery and the building works currently taking place in the hospice grounds to promote their latest show, a revival of Gilbert and Sullivan’s timeless fairytale comedy Iolanthe.
The political satire tells the topical tale of a fairy who falls in love with the Lord Chancellor and causes comic chaos in the House of Lords when her half-fairy son decides to enter Parliament
The show runs at the Montgomery Theatre in Surrey Street from April 10 to 13, with special collections at the end of every performance in aid of Sheffield’s only hospice.
And half the ticket proceeds for the Saturday evening performance will also be going to St Luke’s.
“We always like to support a charity with every show, and this year we are delighted to be backing St Luke’s Hospice because we know how many people throughout Sheffield benefit every year from the hospice’s care and support,” said society spokeswoman Liz Allen.
