When it comes to traditional Christmas treats, yule logs must surely be one of the least expensive.
The most you will have to fork out is £2.29 and everyone loves chocolate cake, from gran to the tots.
We took five yule logs along to Heeley Parish Church’s toddler group so the mums and kids could put them to the test.
As always there are considerable bargains to be had by shopping around and most supermarkets do their own brand.
The clear favourite was Cadbury’s Chocolate Orange Log as many of the mums commented that the citrus stopped the cake being over rich.
Although most come with a sprinkling of icing sugar, the only Christmassy thing about them was the name on the box.
However if you add a couple of your own festive cake decorations to the top then you have a very easy yet presentable treat for visitors.

Asda Chosen By You Chocolate Yule Log
The Asda offering tastes good and the filling is more generous than on any of the others. It serves six and, although has a tendency for the chocolate coating to break up instead of slicing easily, looks great on the plate.
Dan Cake Christmas Log from Iceland
This one was not only the cheapest but also the biggest. The filling and topping were chocolate flavoured as opposed to real chocolate which let the cake down when it comes to taste. However it isn’t over dry, serves up well and will satisfy a hungry family.
Cadbury’s Triple Chocolate Yule Log from Lidl
You know when a firm that specialises in chocolate decides to venture into Yule Logs it is going to be good. Cadbury’s don’t disappoint with this moist and extremely chocolatey cake. If you love chocolate this must be THE Yule Log.
Sainsbury’s Chocolate Log
This cake would have been improved with a more generous lashings of the chocolate coating. It was decidely average considering it was one of the more expensive logs and really didn’t stand out from the others in the taste test.
Cadbury’s Chocolate Orange Log
Once again Cadbury’s gets it just right with this log. Although the addition of orange is a slight break from tradition it is a really delicious addition. This was picked as the tastiest - there’s lots of chocolate but with a twist of orange to stop it being overpoweringly rich.
