Dancers will be all shook up at a special Elvis-themed event raising cash for the Sheffield Women of Steel statue appeal this Friday night.
The event will be held at The Railway Hotel on Penistone Road at Wadsley Bridge, with live music from Elvis tribute band Steve Del Rio and the Dixie Mafia.
The evening, being held close to the anniversary of the King’s death in 1977, is being organised by rock ‘n’ roll expert Mike Lawton, whose mother Rose is a Woman of Steel herself.
The appeal is seeking to raise £150,000 to erect a permanent tribute to the women who worked in the steelworks during World War II.
Mike said: “My mum has been a keen supporter of the cause since it started, and took part in the Star Walk last year even though she was in a wheelchair.
“Rose worked at Needham Veall and Tyzack, which was just off the back of The Moor. She walked through the city centre the morning after the Sheffield Blitz and passed all the devastation on The Wicker, on High Street and on The Moor.”
Mike said his mum had also taken part in another sponsored walk with a team of women who had worked at the Bassetts’ factory at Owlerton.
Admission is £2 with all proceeds going to the fund.
