Conservatory up for top tourism award

Barnsley’s Wentworth Castle Gardens have been shortlisted for a prestigious tourism award following the completion of a ten year project to renovate its stunning Victorian conservatory.

The attraction has been shortlisted in the Large Visitor Attraction of the Year at the White Rose Awards run by Welcome to Yorkshire.

The shortlisting follows the culmination of a decade long fundraising campaign which began after the glasshouse was featured on the BBC programme Restoration in 2003.

After the derelict conservatory was carefully dismantled in 2012, the original iron frame consisting of 4,000 parts was cleaned and re-cast where necessary.

An amazing 35 layers of paints including greens, whites and creams were removed to reveal intricate detail.

Thousands of tiny triangular tiles were cleaned and re-cast to recreate highly decorative Victorian floors and external planting and landscaping followed.

The conservatory is now open to the public.
