Doncaster Amateur Operatic Society is looking for young performers to audition for its next musical, Hairspray, at Cast in March next year.
Because the theme of the show is the breaking down of segregation in 1960s America, the society is keen to attract more black teenagers to take stage roles, said vice-chairman Frances Lister.
Pre-audition rehearsals for over 15s will be held on Thursday, May 22 from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at Kirk Sandall Infant School, Queen Mary Crescent, and the same time on May 29 at the Church Balk Centre, Edenthorpe.
Open auditions will be on Sunday, June 1 at The Assembly Hall, Dentons Green Lane, Kirk Sandall, from 10am. A dance routine will be set at rehearsals and this will be part of the main audition and there will be a £5 audition fee.
Frances said: “As this is very much a dancing show all acting roles will be expected to attend the dance rehearsal auditions. The songs include 1960s-style dance music and ‘downtown’ rhythm and blues.
“The show cast includes white and black performers who can sing, act and dance. As a society we have a good following of young people but would like to reach more of our black community.”
