One of Doncaster’s leading businessmen, who now lives in North Yorkshire, is quietly celebrating the award of a CBE in the New Year’s Honours list for his services to charity.
Terry Bramall is regarded as one of the country’s most generous philanthropists after making a fortune as a building tycoon.
Mr Bramall developed a house building firm in Mexborough - which grew into the Keepmoat company with partner Dick Watson.
In 2007 it became the subject of the biggest ever buyout deal in Yorkshire when the management bought it from the partners for £783 million.
Mr Bramall and his wife placed more than £96 million into the Liz and Terry Bramall Foundation in 2008 and it has been making grants of around £2 million a year to organisations in Yorkshire.
They have given financial support to a wide range of good causes in Yorkshire, including Opera North, the Prince’s Trust and Leeds University.
In recent seasons Mr Bramall, who lives in Harrogate, has been major shareholder of Doncaster Rovers, along with Mr Watson and club owner John Ryan.
Sprotbrough Music Society is still one of the beneficiaries of their largesse even though they have not lived in the village for more than 10 years.
Society chairman Philip Parkin said he was ‘delighted’ by the news of the CBE. Mr Bramall has been a society president for many years and sponsors an annual piano recital.
“He also has a connection with St Mary’s Church, where he used to play the organ, and he and Liz were instrumental in helping with the costs of renovating the church hall. It is a well-deserved award.”
