Hundreds of cups representing British servicemen killed in Afghanistan are on display in Barnsley.

The installation at the Cooper Gallery in Church Street consists of 453 cups, each representing a life lost in the conflict since 2001.

The display has been created by artist Kate Wilson, and each cup has a swatch of the serviceman’s medal ribbon and the age at which they died.

Barnsley Council cabinet spokesman Coun Roy Miller said: “As we commemorate the centenary of the First World War, this provides an opportunity to reflect on modern warfare and how soldiers’ lives are commemorated now.”

The exhibition is on until September 25.
