Minnie the Trans-Pennine tabby - who was microchipped in Sheffield but found sleeping rough in a shed on the Wirral.

The mystery of Minnie the Trans-Pennine tabby, found sheltering in a shed 80 miles from Sheffield, has been solved – thanks to The Star.

The five-year-old puss was found living in the shed in Neston, Wirral, and Cats Protection staff discovered that Minnie - who was suffering an injury thought to have been caused by a hot car engine - had a microchip implanted at Highfield Vets in Sheffield.

But when the Sheffield vet went to the owner’s address they weren’t in and, despite leaving a note, nobody got in touch.

Now, after appealing for information in The Star, the owner of Minnie’s sister Eccles, Paul Bower of Sheffield, came forward to say he thought he could trace Minnie’s original owner.

And, following much investigation by Paul, Minnie’s original owners were tracked down - and were found to have moved from Ecclesfield to the Wirral in 2012.

Then a call came through from Nigel Howard of Neston, Wirral, after his daughter saw Minnie’s story on Facebook. And Nigel revealed he and his family had adopted Minnie from her previous owner four years ago - and live just one road from where Minnie was found.

Minnie’s wounds were in fact self-inflicted, as a result of allergies for which she is having treatment, and after more veterinary treatment she should be well enough to return home soon.

Jean Keogh, Cats Protection branch co-ordinator, said: “It’s incredible to think people living so many miles away helped solve the riddle of this lovely cat. We can’t thank the media enough.

“We are seeing more and more microchipped cats, which is great, but would like to stress how important it is for owners to update the contact information.”
