South Yorkshire colliery band is ready for show

The under-threat band made famous by movie Brassed Off is tuning up ready for an annual concert for the Mayor’s Charity in Barnsley.

The Grimethorpe Colliery Band concert will take place at Emmanuel Methodist Church on Huddersfield Road, Barnsley, on Monday, April 15.

Tickets are priced £10 and are on sale already from the Emmanuel Church office, from 9am to noon, or by calling 01226 321 511.

All funds raised from the concert will be donated to the charities supported by the Mayor of Barnsley, Coun Dorothy Higginbottom - Rotherham and Barnsley MIND and the Barnsley Blind and Partially Sighted Association.

Coun Higginbottom said: “I’m delighted that once again we will have the opportunity to hear the wonderful tunes of this much-loved local band.

“I very much appreciate their support in helping to raise funds for the Mayor’s Charity.

“Everyone is welcome to join us and enjoy an evening of great music.”

The band, founded in 1917, is at risk of closure after its sponsorship dried up. Its battle is not its first fight to survive - after the pit shut the band’s story inspired 1995 film Brassed Off, starring Ewan McGregor and Tara Fitzgerald.
