SHEFFIELD FC 2 v ROTHERHAM UNITED 1: SHEFFIELD'S oldest football club claimed the scalp of its 'newest' one last night.
Rotherham United, who held Derby County at the Don Valley Stadium on Saturday, travelled to the other side of the city but couldn't Unibond League Sheffield FC.

With just three of Saturday's starting line-up but half-a-dozen with League experience, the Millers could rarely find enough intelligent balls into the box to unlock a sturdy Sheffield defence.

Sheffield could have gone ahead after three minutes when Steve Wolley saw his fine 25 yarder superbly tipped over by Mark Oxley.

The Millers were adopting a more robust approach than Barnsley had done on the same ground last Saturday, but they lacked guile in midfield and up front and the League Two team fell behind on 12 minutes when Wolley's adventurous streak down the left forced confusion in the box, Matt Roney sidefooting into an empty net.

Rotherham equalised on 25 minutes when lively Steve Connor's cross was sidefooted home at the back post by new signing Alex Rhodes.

A free header from a corner saw Gary Townsend make it 2-1 for the Dronfield outfit on 22 minutes.

While the Millers had almost all the second half possession they could not turn it into goals amnd closest they came was when sub Tom Cahill rattled the bar with two minutes left and there was still time for Jamie Yates to fire a chance wide.
