JOHN FEWKES plans to overcome a come-forward aggressive opponent with a controlled, classy boxing exhibition tomorrow night - and walk away the English lightweight title.
The 5ft 7in Sheffield fighter takes on the bigger, more explosive Martin Gethin at the Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre, Nottingham to dispute ownership of the domestic title.
And while Gethin is a KO merchant boasting a near-50 per cent stoppage rate, Norfolk Park's Fewkes has a plan to contain and overpower the Walsall warrior.
Speaking on video on thestar.co.uk, Fewkes said he thought his own track record of fighting more difficult opponents would stand him in good stead.
Fewkes' 17 fight record, which includes opponents like Tontcho Tontchev and Gary Reid, had taught him a few "little tricks...and I think that will be the difference" he says.
"Obviously Gethin's a good fighter, he looks very strong, durable and tough but I do think I am the better boxer and that's going to show on Friday night."
Fewkes said Gethin was a "big strong lad, a come forward aggressive fighter which is great for the fans.
"But the difference is I am more technically skilled.
"If that doesn't work and we have to go to Plan B and stand in the trenches having a fight that is what we'll do. I know I will prevail."
Fewkes plans to box him with craft and intelligence in the opening rounds of the 10-sequence title fight.
He and trainer Glyn Rhodes say they will then assess whether any change in style is needed.
Gethin has alrady claimed the scalp of another previously-unbeaten Sheffield boxer, Nadeem Siddique, whom he stopped in July.
"Siddique who was unbeaten that was a good stoppage, so obviously he (Gethin) has got a dig" Fewkes says.
"You can't deny Siddique's record, unbeaten in 22, so he is a capable fighter."
But Fewkes said he was comfortable at the weight, maturing fast, and ready to KO Gethin if the chance arrives.
The Sheffielder joked he would order "an open top coach to the New Inn once I've won on Friday."
