Fans threatened each other and hurled abuse and one man appeared badly concussed after being attacked as he tried to leave the venue.

Promoter Glyn Rhodes, who left the ring to try and restore order said: "There is no room for hooliganism in sport, it looks like people may have had too much to drink and didn't mind if they spoiled the evening. I have no time for them.

"Someone told me they had been too boisterous on a tram earlier, getting to the venue. People who cause trouble like that disgust me."

Tensions were raised during the 98-second fight in which Oughtibridge bantamweight Ross Burkinshaw knocked out Leeds opponent Mike Holloway.

Sheffield fans chanted "Easy, easy" after Holloway was KO'd.

Burkinshaw, a serving soldier in The Rifles regiment, instantly beckoned to his supporters, stood a few yards from a group of around 30 West Yorkshire people, appealing to them not to disrespect his rival, who was receiving attention.

As supporters began taunting each other security men rushed to the middle of the rumpus and the Master of Ceremonies implored them: "Please sit down and don't spoil the event."

But the football-style chanting continued and Rhodes went into the Leeds section to attempt to diffuse trouble.

And the MC asked people to show some order and "disperse quietly" adding: "Boxing is a sport, please show your appreciation and do not cause trouble"

Burkinshaw also took the microphone to appeal for calm.

"I told them that we had both just boxed but we were still friends. We shook each other's hands before and after the fight because it is a sport at the end of the day" said the fighter.

But one of Leeds contingent was flattened by a blow on the way out and appeared semi-conscious on the floor.

Former world champion Clinton Woods, who was in the crowd, said: "Any punches thrown at these shows should be inside the ring. Anybody who does it outside are not welcome. Glyn did the right thing in going into the crowd and trying to quieten things down; the fans will always listen to him."

Leeds football fans had been at the stadium a few days previously for a cup match against Rotherham United, which they lost.

Friday's boxing event took place on the indoor running track area.
