ASK most people in Sheffield what they think about the city's Manor estate and you are likely to hear a string of negative ideas.
It must be said that this is not totally invented: there are some people on the estate who have brought disgrace on themselves and have created problems for their neighbours.

However, it does the Manor a total injustice to believe that everyone th
ere is up to no good and that only problems are nurtured on its streets.

Take for instance the young people who are featured in The Star tonight. They have decided to take it upon themselves to help out with a spot of gardening for people who have problem with the job themselves.

This not only shows that the estate's young people are a credit to their parents and community but also that they instinctively know that the reputation of an area begins with how it looks. And by helping neighbours keep their gardens neat and tidy they are going a long way towards upturning preconceived ideas about the Manor.

Well done!

Dedicated Adele on top of the world

SHEFFIELD'S Adele Pennington has climbed her way into mountaineering circles's record books after becoming the first British woman to ascend the world's eighth highest mountain, Manalsu, in the Nepalese Himalayas.

The mountain's conquest also highlights the place played by Sheffield in the mountaineering world.

The city has long been a magnet for climbers, who are drawn to Sheffield due to its proximity to the Peak District and its gritstone challenges, offering regular opportunities to practice their sport. Over the years many climbers have moved to Sheffield to do just that, and going on to become world-famous names.

And now we are proud to see another name being added to that list. Adele's achievements come at some cost. They represent tremendous personal dedication and the nurturing of hard-won skills.

She is a tremendous example of what can be achieved with dedication.
