FORGET the Olympics for a moment, and look closer to home for athletic excitement. For the 31st Westfield Health British Transplant Games get underway in Sheffield today raising the curtain on the most heart-warming sports spectacle in the land.
Thousands of competitors, all of whom have had their lives touched by the modern medical miracle of transplant surgery, are here for the occasion, which concludes on Sunday with the flagship track and field events.
It is a tribute to our sporting
reputation to be chosen to host the event. And it also offers a moment for our readers to receive some praise. For they rose to the challenge to sign up to the Organ Donor Register, beating our target of 25,000 names.
This is an occasion when there truly can only be winners!
Please help to get Sheffield movingOUR readers are never slow to complain about the state of the city's roads, both in terms of poor surface and confusing layouts. Now they have the chance to do something about it.
The council has shorlisted 20 motoring blackspots from a list of problem areas put forward by the people who know best about what is wrong with our roads - the men and women who drive around the city on a daily basis.
Now the public is asked to put the list into priority order, with the most popular (should that be unpopular?) receiving attention in the autumn. We urge readers to take up this opportunity and help make a difference to get Sheffield moving.
Tune in to peaceSTRESSED out at work? Well, here's something less to worry about: you're not the only one! We worry about broken computers, too much work, demanding clients and annoying bosses, according to a report out today. One other thing which winds up the workers is colleagues who talk too loudly. Surely, that's easily overcome. Just switch on the iPod and turn up the volume!
