KELHAM Island Museum is finally to emerge into the light of day after 15 gloomy months during which time it has undergone extensive repair and restoration work necessitated by last summer's devastating floods.
Doors to the museum have been locked to the public ever since, with admission only allowed to a few groups of visiting school children.

But staff at the museum have been far from idle. They have worked with real dedication to not only put right th
e damage caused by the floodwaters but also to make sure that the museum - already one of the most popular attractions in Sheffield - will be brighter and better than ever when the wrappers finally come off next month.

Officials have taken the opportunity of the closure to carry out redesign work and a £700,000 National Lottery grant will also see the creation of a new exhibition area for the locally legendary Ken Hawley cutlery collection, which creates a unique tribute to the city's glorious metal working past.

It has been a long wait but we're sure the results will show that it has been worth the patience and look forward to the museum delighting visitors for many years to come.

Life begins when you are ready!

FROM a badminton-playing 80-year-old to a 73-year-old table tennis ace; from a couple who set up a speed dating service for the over-50s to an 83-year-old chap who takes his dog on a seven mile walk every day!

These are just some of the sporting heroes our older generation boasts these days - and proof that life begins not only at 40 but whenever you want to take it up a gear or two.

We have been delighted to throw the news spotlight on these energetic elders and to join forces with The Oddfellows friendly society to find people who have two things in common - they are over 50 years old and are making the most of life.

We were rewarded with a flood of entrants for the Active & Ageless Awards and know that our readers will join us in wishing all entrants a long and very active life indeed.
