THE problem of parking at Sheffield's Northern General Hospital certainly stirred up strong feelings, not only among visitors who regularly complained about the difficulty of finding somewhere for their vehicles, but also from staff who were told they could no longer park in the hospital grounds .
That in itself led to further complaints, this time from people in neighbouring streets who were unhappy that hospital workers were leaving their cars outside their homes and making already overcrowded roads even more difficult to negotiate.

Now t
here are plans in the pipeline which will please many: the hospital is considering building a multi-storey car park with space for almost 900 vehicles. And what is more, it would be built on a space in the grounds of the hospital which currently accommodates 150 cars.

It is a pity that the changes which caused so much upset could not have been delayed until after the car park is built. But at least this proposal now offers some respite for so many people, mostly patients and visitors but also some staff who will have designated spaces in the car park.

We sincerely hope that this scheme is fast-tracked and work gets underway before much longer. It can only cure many headaches.

Couple sacrifice the good life for others

YOU cannot help but admire Sheffield doctor Nicole Hudd and her husband Ben. For they are giving up their comfortable lifestyle to spend a year working with impoverished women and children in Bangladesh.

They will be based in one of the poorest parts of the country where women are driven to terrible ends to survive.

Nicole will use her medical knowledge to help out while Ben will use his business expertise to coach local women to set up their own company.

Now they are busy making final plans for their expedition and deserve all the help that people can muster.

This is a couple who are sacrificing a lot to make a difference for others. We wish them well.
