FOR a man who has gone down in popular mythology for uniting the red and blue sides of Sheffield, the question of creating a lasting tribute to football legend Derek Dooley was awash with obstacles. Fittingly, it was put forward by people representing each side of the political divide that a road should be named after the former Wednesday player and latter day United kingpin.
But it could easily collapse into bickering as to which road would be best suited to the purpose. We hope that does not happen. The problem is one of geography: name a road at Hillsborough after the great man and you upset the Blades; select somewher
e in the shadow of Bramall Lane and the Owls will be irritated.
Today we see a good compromise. While the Parkway was put forward as a possibility, we feel its name is so firmly entrenched in the city's landscape this could only lead to confusion. Instead, it has been suggested that a section of the new inner relief road is the perfect choice, uniting the two halves of Sheffield in much the same way Mr Dooley did in his lifetime.
As good a choice as any and one, we feel, the people of Sheffield will support, regardless the colour of their football scarf.
Dose of democracy will last for yearsTHE major criticism of democracy is that too many are apathetic over their rights to vote. So it is encouraging to learn of an initiative which introduces young people to the idea.
Elections are to be held for Sheffield Youth Council - the first for the organisation which was set up last August.
We believe this dose of democracy will have lasting consequences, and will encourage tomorrow's citizens to take their responsibilities seriously.

Presumably that's two million people whose paint has already dried!
