IAN Ainsworth and Richard Milns are very Special Constables indeed. For they braved the murky waters of a Sheffield canal to rescue potential victims after a car was found abandoned, partially submerged at Tinsley.
Mercifully there was nobody trapped inside the vehicle but that was not known at the moment that the officers came upon the scene.
They acted with cool determination which reflects the highest instincts among our police which are most admired by t
he public and deserve some kind of recognition.
It is a different matter for those responsible for the car landing in the canal in the first place. It had been stolen and was clearly deliberately driven to the spot and dumped in the water. Not only were they responsible for much inconvenience on the part of the owner and put at risk other motorists as they made their way to the car's final resting space, but they also put the rescue services at risk when they had to search the dangerous scene.
We hope someone who knows the background to this offence does the decent thing and comes forward.
Good to come from towers' destructionTHE countdown has finally started to bring about the end of the Tinsley cooling towers. They are finally to be demolished in explosive style on the Bank Holiday weekend.
Few issues have so divided the people of Sheffield so deeply as the fate of the huge structures which stand alongside the motorway at Tinsley. The arguments have raged over whether they should be protected (possibly as works of art) or cleared as a blot on the landscape.
But you cannot escape the fact that the twin towers - last of seven which once stood on the site of the old power station - will be missed (with equal feelings of regret and delight).
At least power firm E.ON who are clearing the site are to bring about some lasting good from the demolition. A book on the site's history will raise money for charity, as will a raffle to find the person with the historic job of pressing the bring down the towers.
