ANGELA Wright was an exceptional woman. Deprived of the use of her body through a cruel and rare disease, she refused to allow it to rob her of her dignity and pride.
She would go to the pub, visit Meadowhall, even play football with her family - all from the confines of a wheelchair controlled by her chin.

She lived life as fully as she was able.

But something happened three years ago which led to care prov
ided by Sheffield City Council being withdrawn. That should never have been allowed to happen.

From that moment, Angela Wright's quality of life plunged to a degrading pit which was barely human.

The city deserves an explanation on why she was apparently abandoned, left to live in the same clothes, to sit in the same wheelchair, to be confined behind the same four walls until death claimed her at the early age of 45.

Whatever the explanation, we feel that a caring society can offer no excuse for allowing this to have happened. We should be adaptable enough to find a way to help someone, even under the most trying of circumstances.

This case should be thoroughly investigated. It may be too late to be a comfort to Angela Wright but we pray it would mean nobody else having to face the same degrading fate as this exceptional woman.

Awards event show we are all winners

THERE were only winners last night at The Star Sports Awards.

Boxer Ryan Rhodes walked away with the big prize, former test umpire Dickie Bird was given a lifetime achievement award and a host of others were honoured in a fantastic event at Pond's Forge. Paul Goodison's Olympic heroics were honoured as was Doncaster Rovers' promotion to The Championship.

But the real beneficiary was St John Ambulance, who sponsored the event. The service has helped people for more than 130 years and its excellent work was justly recognised at the event.

It all made for a great night and helped a wonderfully worth cause.

That makes us all winners.
